This years ACTIVE takes the form of a water weekend at Southport Watersports Centre between Friday 26th and Sunday 28th September 2008.

The centre is the top venue in the Northwest for watersports and the weekend promises to be a fantastic event.

Bowley Volunteer Staff

We are currently embarking on a restructure of the volunteer staff at our County campsite.

Bleakholt Animal Sanctuary

3rd Padiham St.Johns Cubs are collecting tins of dog/cat food to donate to Bleakholt Animal Sanctuary. All adults and children within the county are invited to donate a tin of food. Climbing Wall Award - Training & Assessment

Alternative Adventure are organising a number of courses which may be of interest. They are the Mountain Leader Training England (MLTE) Climbing Wall Award combine (wall and abseil modules) training and assessment courses.  

The next CWA combined training courses are planned to run on Tuesday 8 and Wednesday 9 April 2008, Tuesday 29 and Wednesday 30 April 2008 or Tuesday 13 and Wednesday 14 May 2008.

Terrain 2 Hillwalking Assessments

To be held in The Lake District 16th-17th-18th May 2008.

I've been asked by a number of you to offer a terrain 2 hillwalking assessment. Because of the permit requirements the assessment will need to be held over a weekend. I would like to propose the dates 16th-17th-18th May 2008.

Bowley Campsite Celebrates its 40th Anniversary

To mark the 40th anniversary of Bowley Campsite, we have held a competition to design an anniversary badge. Designs were welcome from either individuals or groups from any section and the only stipulation was that the badge size be 75mm.

Assessments for Hillwalking Terrain 1/2 and Mountainbiking permits

During the spring months of April, May & early June I hope to be holding a number of training and assessment days for Terrain 1 Hillwalking & Mountainbiking (Trails). I would also like to put on a Terrain  2 assessment weekend forleaders in either the Lake District or Snowdonia.

Duke of Edinburghs Award Workshops

During the spring of 2008 a series of workshops are being held across the country to help adults involved in the Explorer Scout and Scout Network Sections to better deliver the Duke of Edinburgh's Award. There will be one workshop in  each of the English regions, each running from 10:00 - 16:00 with coffee and registration from 09:30am.

The 5th Burnley have a quantity of OS. Map Sheet OL21: South Pennines, for sale. They cover Burnley, Hebden Bridge, Keighly and Todmorden, and are double sided, being part of the OS Explorer Series.

Urgent help needed

St Leonards Scouts, Langho, (Blackburn District) are desperate for helpers on a Friday night for their scout troop, They have unfortunately lost all but one of their leaders and Andrew can't run it on his own much longer.

They need either a permanent helper or just people to help out on a random Friday night just so they can run the evening.

Glenmore Lodge (in Scotland) is offering free training and  assessment courses in; Summer ML, Winter ML, Trail Cycle Leader and Mountain  Bike Leader for leaders involved in the voluntary sector. World Scout Jamboree TV

The World Scout Jamboree is to be broadcast live on satellite and cable TV (and part-time on Freeview).

Beginning with the opening ceremony, programmes kick off at 2045 on Saturday 28 July.

  • If you've got SKY, it's on channel 539.
  • If you've got Virgin TV, it's on channel 233.
  • For Freeview viewers, it's on channel 87, but only between 0600 and 0900.

This sounds like a great way to get family and friends to see what the young people of the world are up to!

Jamboree-bay: The sale of the Century

The 21st World Scout Jamboree: 10 days of activities galore for 40,000 young people. With so many Scouts doing so much, a huge array of brand-new equipment has been bought - but what happens to it all when the participants head home on 8 August?

After the Jamboree the majority of this equipment will be of no further use to the organisers, but will be of use to Scout Groups, Districts and Counties. The plan is to sell off everything at a reduced price to UK Scouts.

"Jambo" - The Official Song of the World Scout Jamboree is now available to order either as a digital download or as a souvenir CD!

Founders Day Service 22nd Feb 2007

Thank you to all the Leaders and Young people who braved the elements to attend the Founders Day Service in Blackburn Cathederal last night.

The event was a huge success and thanks must go to the team led by John Davey who pulled the whole event together.

Winter Snow and Ice Trip

West Lancashire Scouts have 5 or 6 spaces left on Phase II of their Winter Snow & Ice Trip. Anybody in East Lancashire interested?  Minimum age 13.5 or so, older Scouts/Explorer Scouts - up to geriatric Leaders! Half Term  week: 13th-18th February. Four mountain days.

SSAGO is 40 !

Martin Whelan is currently undertaking a research project for the Student Scout and Guide Organisation, and is looking to contact as many former members as possible within East Lancashire Scouts.

In 2007, Scouting will be 100 years old and the Student Scout and Guide Organisation (SSAGO) will be 40 years old. A special reunion rally is planned for early July and other events including a formal ball are currently being finalised.

2007 Commemorative Badge

Introducing the official, approved, Badge for all East and West Lancashire members to wear on their uniform from now until 2008 to commemorate Scouting in Lancashire.

Off Road, Trail and Mountain Biking

A senior Mountain Biking Instructor has offered to assess potential leaders in their suitability for leading the above. FREE OF CHARGE!!

Hill and Mountain Walking

It is essential that those leading adventurous activities have evidence of being assessed to a standard and have permits issued by their District or County Commissioner indicating the level they have been assessed at.

Very few of us have permits and therefore in order to get the young people out on the hills and to kickstart the new permits scheme, please see here.

Leaders Brewery Tour

Clitheroe District is planning to hold a brewery trip to Daniel Twaites Brewery in Blackburn. The 1 1/2 hour trip around the Brewery and Visitor Centre will commence at 1930 hrs, Monday 14th November, and close in the Visitor Centre with a Hot Pot supper and 4 drinks. The cost is £9.50 per person.

Monopoly Run 2006

Run by Greater London North East Scouts, This event involves teams of 5 travelling to all the places on the London Monopoly board, in the fastest time. The event will be catered for, and there will be a disco in the evenings. The event will be held at Gilwell Park, the 'Home of Scouting'.

Scouting mission in Germany

The 2nd Rossendale Scout Group Band have put the final touches to their forthcoming trip to Germany.

The final arrangements for their forthcoming tour of Northern Germany have just been announced by the 2nd Rossendale Scout Group Band. Flying from Manchester on Friday 21st October, the band will stay in Bocholt (the twin town of Rossendale) for four nights and perform a wide range of concerts.

Misprinted CRB Forms

The Records Department at Scout HQ wish to alert all Scout Officials who process the CRB system at District, Area and County levels that there are currently in circulation an unknown number of misprinted and invalid CRB application forms.  These "rogue" forms are distinguishable as follows: on the top left of the front page of the application you will see, instead of the name of The Scout Association, the name of a company entitled, LIFESTYLE CARE PLC located in London N12.

Please search your stocks down to Group level for these misprinted forms ...

The bombings in London have touched us all in Scouting.We have been greatly encouraged by the number of messages of support and solidarity that we have received from Scouting friends around the world. There are many stories of personal support and assistance being given by Scouts and Leaders.

Our thoughts and prayers go out especially to the injured and the bereaved, and to all those in the emergency services.

In Memory...

Fred Law MBE 1924-2005

Fred Law joined the Scout Movement in 1939 and was the County Commissioner for Scouts in East Lancashire from 1981 - 1988, when he became Vice President. He died in Burnley General Hospital on Wednesday the 13th April.

Fred was well known and respected throughout the area, and his passing will be felt by many young people, most of whom are adults now with families of their own.  So many have been influenced  by his contribution. He will be greatly missed.

Tsunami Disaster Appeal Concert

The 2nd Rossendale Scout Band are holding a Tsunami Disaster Appeal Concert on Friday 28th January at Bacup Leisure Hall.

Currently the number of Scout groups is limited by the number of volunteers that can be found to run them. EuroJam Needs You

The EuroJam team are looking for performers to take part in the opening and closing ceremonies, day shows and a special event  called Celebrate Europe Day. Network Haunt 2004

Ever heard of the Pendle witches? Network have organised a witch-hunt over Pendle Hill the day before All-Hallows-Eve. Afterwards, a fancy dress bonfire to banish the evil spirits and burn any witches they may find.

Peter Duncan to be the next Chief Scout

Actor and TV action man Peter Duncan is set to take on a new challenge as the new Chief Scout

Famous for his round-the-world expeditions, as well as his stint on Blue Peter and Duncan Dares in the 1980's, Peter is delighted to be breaking new ground with the Scout Movement in the United Kingdom.

Peter will take up the five-year appointment from the 5th of September.

Sir Ian McKellen to star as Baden-Powell.

'Be Prepared' a new play about the life of the Founder will be broadcast on BBC Radio 4 on Monday 12 July between 1415 and 1500 hrs. The drama by writer Andy Rashleigh features the legendary actor-knight, Ian McKellen best known for his roles in blockbusters such as 'The Lord of the Rings' and 'X-Men'. It promises to be fascinating listening for any one with even a passing interest in the Victorian visionary.

Free Ordnance Survey Resource

Ordnance Survey has completed their trio of resources with a free guide to the Navigator Badge for Pack Leaders. This gives you some programme ideas with regards to introducing your local area, navigating between two places and using a street map as well as some useful facts and contacts.

This resource is now available from the Information Centre on 0845 300 1818 along with a similar resource for Troop Leaders and a mapzone leaflet for Cubs and Scouts.

Betty Clay Memorial Service

A Memorial Service to celebrate and give thanks for the life of Betty Clay will be held in Wells Cathedral, Somerset on Monday, 12th July 2004 at 2.30pm.

Betty was the youngest daughter of our Founder, Lord Baden-Powell and Lady Olave Baden-Powell.

Scout Networking in Barcelona

The European Scout Office has been asked to recruit about 20 young people to serve as volunteers for one month during the World Youth Festival, Barcelona, 8 to 14 August 2004. Volunteers must be aged between 18 and 25 and be available from 22nd of July to 22nd of August, in order to help with with the organization of the event and the clearing away.
